Guul Zaroth Ch.5 Only The Beginning
A sharp breath inhaled, his hands rapidly clenched into fists and his body convulsed as Rolf was jarringly dragged into the waking world. His face was wrought with panic and his chest heaved up and down in ragged, laboured breaths. "Wha-what? I was dead, I'm dead!" he muttered while cloying at his torso where not so long ago there had been numerous gouges, broken ribs and a skewering tree limb.
What Rolf found left him blinking in dazed bewilderment. His clothes had been mended, his scars healed over, though definitely present, and the gaping hole in his stomach was stitched up, and rather effectively at that. "...what?" he breathed. "My ski

As the afternoon waned, the tavern was quiet, mostly empty save for a few scattered patrons and the staff. The bartender, a tall, slim man with gaunt features and a slowly receding hairline stood his ground, eyeing a small cluster of unruly types near the back. His skin was a dusky olive shade, his hair jet black. Aside from two or three men at the counter enjoying a drink, there sat four rough-looking men, playing cards at a table in the corner.
A pile of coins sat in the middle of the table while one of the men nervously surveyed his cards and took a deep swig off of his mug. "I can't be down this much, dammit!" he growled, throwing his ca

A wet sucking noise filled Rolf's ears as he pulled his boot free from the sinking mud pit under his feet. "So, princess, if I'm stuck ferrying you around, I'll need some direction. Where are we going?" Rolf spoke to seemingly no one. That was until a reply came from the hefty trunk in his hand.
"I don't know, precisely. I find myself rather out of sorts." Laurelei's muffled voice replied from inside the box. "I would very much like to see a human city. Rudolf, could you take me to one?"
"Rudolf?" Rolf asked, shooting the trunk a curious glance.
"That is your name, is it not?" she replied.
"Do I look like a ruffle-necked Southerner to you

"Come on princess. Hurry it along." Rolf said as he stood in the hall and pounded Laurelei's chamber door.
"I am dearly sorry Rolf, but I'm used to having servants do this for me," she called back from inside.
"We're on the road, we don't have the luxury of fussing with our hair and clothes every night."
"Oh fine," Laurelei said, finally relenting and exiting the room.
Rolf could hardly tell the difference between now and when she went in. "I was worried that you might be in there until morning."
With an indignant huff, Laurelei passed off the remark and proceeded down the hall. "It is still early in the evening. I wish to see the ci
"Ow, ow, shit! That stings dammit!" Rolf cursed and fussed while a needle threaded in and out of his throat. Resting against a tree, he sat in the shadow of a great stone tower, with Laurelei at his side.
The structure stretched high into the sky, bearing battle scars and the wear of age. Moss crawled up its base and invaded deep crevices, long gashes carved into the stone and running all the way up to its peak. At the crown of the tower, a colossal sword had been plunged down its length. The blade was almost a metre wide and just under 8 metres long.
"Oh hush, we're almost finished." Kneeling at his side with a small array of sewing equipm
Rusted Steel screeched and squealed as the rickety old tower all but teetered against the buffeting winds. The tower rose metre upon metre, the ground almost a blur from the top. The kid scaled the side, pulling himself up the ladder two rungs at a time. With one hand in front of the other, he hauled himself up onto a platform near the peak. Rising and dusting off his coat, he gripped the nearby safety rail, looking down at the world below him.
An expanse of wasteland, sweeping sands stretched out in all directions. In the distance to the West, barren city-scape consumed the horizon, the setting sun a glorious flare of orange at it's back.

In a royal bedchamber, anointed with silk and fine art, the light scritch-scratch of a quill scrawling across parchment filled the air. Delicate, manicured hands guided the feather with grace and precision. A young girl, no more than twelve, with skin as pale as snow and chestnut brown hair in meticulously curled bunches, sat at a small desk. A voluminous tome was spread open before her and her attention was wholly focused on her work. With precise and practised strokes, she sketched a series of complex symbols onto the page.
"Oh yes, almost perfect," she whispered to herself. A little smile spread across her face to reveal a pair of sma

“Rolf!” roared a middle aged woman. Tall and toned, with broad shoulders and black hair that hung to her back in long braids. To many she resembled some kind of scoundrel or ruffian. Her face was easily distinguished by the slender scar on her brow and the wooden pipe clenched between her teeth. She stood over an anvil, dressed in a smith’s apron and thick work gloves. A pair of tongs were held in one hand and a hammer in the other. “Hurry up and get that steel on the forge, while the coals are still hot!”
“I’m coming, you grouchy old harpy!” he barked back as he emerged from an old stone s
A mighty howl rang out across the misty moors and sent chills trembling through every soul in earshot. The noise emanated from inside a small house near the edge of the market. Ivan and a squad of five guards had assembled outside, crossbows drawn and pointed at the wall of the cottage.
"This one must've slipped past the Wolfsguard!" Ivan called out. "We have to stop it here before it gets to the shelters!"
With a thunderous crash a great whole was ripped in the outer wall of the house. Wood splintered and a huge black beast emerged from within. It stood at nearly eight feet tall, a wolf twisted into the shape of a man and covered from hea

Rolf Ziegel, a boy of 16 years, found himself staring at the Wolfsguard banners on the wall. The soft slate blue and bright silver contrasted against the grey stone of the wall. He found that after his senses were rattled, a good focus point for his vision helped reduce all the spinning and wobbling. Groaning aloud as he sat up, his face scrunched up at the familiar taste of blood in his mouth. He ran his tongue along the back of his teeth; performing a quick headcount and affirming that there were no more missing than usual.
"You've lost boy, go home," said a gruff voice from the other side of the room.
Rolf wiped a smear of blood from his
